Chapter 01 · Marketing

Search goes AI-first

Ranking volatility, AI Mode and the ads heading for the UK.

Google’s AI is changing how shoppers find products, and ads are following

Three October updates show where search is heading: product discovery inside AI Mode, ads on follow-up questions, and sponsored placements in AI Overviews, due in the UK in Q4.

  • 57%

  • Q4
2026: ads in AI Mode come to the UK

AI Mode & product discovery

A US study found that 57% of product links in Google AI Mode answers led to Google Shopping, while 46.5% of product answers linked exclusively to Google pages.

For retailers, this means customers may discover and compare products without immediately visiting their website. Website traffic alone may therefore miss part of a brand’s visibility in AI search.

The findings measure displayed links, rather than clicks or sales.

Ads in AI Mode are expanding

Ads will be able to show on follow-up questions in AI Mode.

These are called multiturn ads. They appear when users go back and forth with AI Mode and the conversation has commercial relevance.

Launching in the US first, with ads in AI Mode coming to the UK in Q4.

Ads in AI Overviews

Google AI search ads: what the UK update means.

What you need to know
  • UK launch planned for Q4 2026: Google is bringing ads to AI Mode, its conversational search experience. The announcement gives no exact UK launch date.
  • More opportunities during product research: ads can match both a shopper’s question and the AI response, helping brands appear as users explore needs and compare options.
  • Existing campaigns can participate: Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible. AI Max and broad match extend contextual coverage; exact and phrase match can still serve on directly commercial searches.
  • Search behaviour is changing: Google reports AI Mode queries are approximately 3× longer than traditional searches, reflecting more detailed, conversational questions.
  • Practical takeaway: review conversion tracking, product feeds and landing pages, then test broader targeting against commercial targets. Advertisers cannot buy these placements separately.

AI Mode queries are about three times longer than traditional searches.

Google Search ranking volatility stayed very high through October

Repeated waves of ranking movement, with spikes on 16, 20–21 and 24 October.

October has seen repeated waves of Google Search ranking volatility throughout the month.

Spikes were reported on 16, 20–21 and 24 October, with further volatility reported on 27 October. This follows Google’s September 2026 spam update, which completed on 8 October.

What does this mean for SEO? Ranking and organic traffic fluctuations may not be isolated incidents. Several October movements remain unconfirmed updates; Google has not confirmed a new October update. Monitor rankings, Google Search Console clicks and impressions before making reactive SEO changes.

Google loses market share… to its own AI

Alphabet lost over $500bn in market value as AI Overviews ate into its ad revenue, and paid ads are now heading into AI Overviews.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, lost just over $500 billion (£374bn) in market value following its end-of-year business operations update, driving its stock down to a six-month low.

The sell-off was triggered by revelations that Google’s AI Overviews are impacting its traditional advertising revenue. Google have since announced that paid ads will start emerging in AI Overviews by the end of the year.

What are the implications for SEO? As paid advertisements increasingly dominate AI search real estate, securing visibility in AI Overviews and driving organic traffic will become significantly more challenging.
SEO
Opportunity

Google makes links more prominent in AI search

More links, higher up and with thumbnails, could send more visits from AI answers. Being included still needs measuring.

On 15 October 2026, Google announced updates to AI Overviews and AI Mode to help users explore the websites behind its answers.

What’s changing? More links within AI answers, appearing higher in responses. More prominent related article links, including image thumbnails. A test highlighting official websites at the top of relevant responses.

What does this mean for SEO? These changes could create more opportunities for users to visit websites from AI answers. For our clients, we should monitor visibility, clicks and conversions to understand the impact. More prominent links do not automatically mean more traffic.

Takeaway: being included in an AI answer matters, but we still need to measure what happens next.

Meta adds product browsing to existing ads

From 28 October, people can explore products inside Facebook and Instagram before clicking through. Meta reports a 3% conversion uplift.

From 28 October, Meta is rolling out product browsing across existing Facebook and Instagram ads, allowing users to explore products directly within the app before clicking through to a website.

This aims to create a smoother shopping experience and reduce friction in the customer journey, with Meta reporting an average 3% uplift in conversions.

Key drawbacks to consider. Tracking discrepancies: users browsing in app may create gaps between Meta-reported clicks and website sessions in GA4. Reduced control: users may browse products in app rather than following the intended journey directly to the website. Uncertain performance impact: Meta’s claimed conversion uplift may not translate into improved ROAS or lower CPA for every account.

A quick read on how visually varied each ad set really is, so you can fight creative fatigue with genuinely different ideas.

The Creative Diversity column helps assess how varied your ad creatives are.

Using a mix of distinct visuals, formats, messaging and concepts can help reduce creative fatigue and improve performance.

The focus should be on genuinely different creative ideas, rather than simply creating multiple versions of the same ad.

UX & Design · Personas
Opportunity

Know your buyer, scale your creative

Sharp personas make ads that land and websites that convert: one piece of research, two wins.

Great ads start with knowing who you’re talking to.

Consumer, competitor and category research builds sharp personas around the real buyer, so your messaging leads with the pain points, motivations and objections that actually drive a purchase.

That clarity is what lets creative scale. With a defined messaging angle for each persona, you can build a library of ad variations that reach different buyers without diluting the brand, giving platforms like Meta more of what works and less wasted spend.

User interviews and usability testing make those personas real. They show how customers think and talk, giving you confidence in your ads, and they reveal where your website is losing people. One piece of research, two wins: better ads that bring the right people in, and a better site that converts them.

Amazon brings AI conversations to Sponsored Brands

Shoppers can ask questions straight from your ad. Detailed, accurate product content will matter more than ever.

Branded Conversations is a new AI-powered feature within Sponsored Brands, which allows shoppers to click suggested questions directly on Sponsored Brands ads, opening an AI shopping conversation where they can ask follow-up questions, compare products and receive personalised recommendations.

Brands can provide product guides, benefits and other information to help shape these conversations. Advertisers pay CPC for the initial conversation-starter click, and then follow-up questions are free.

This is a further indication of Amazon’s shift towards conversational shopping, where having detailed, accurate product content could become increasingly important. The feature is expected to launch in the US in January 2027, with no confirmed UK launch date yet.

Amazon launches Review Request ads

A paid way to ask recent buyers for a rating while they shop: an alternative to Vine, with no free product to give away.

A new campaign format, Review Requests, recently launched on Amazon, in open beta this month in the US.

This new advertising solution reaches customers who recently purchased your product and invites them to submit a star rating or written review while they are shopping on Amazon. Instead of offering a discount for a promotion, this campaign format bids similar to a Sponsored Products campaign, against other advertisers.

This means shoppers will now see sponsored requests to review whilst searching for products on Amazon. It offers an alternative to Amazon Vine, which requires you to give the product away for free in order to obtain a review, and pay a fee.

However, the shopper has no incentive to review their purchase, so engagement may be limited.

PHP2Shell: how we safeguarded every storefront

When critical PHP vulnerabilities landed, we audited, patched and verified every Magento store and managed cloud environment.

When the critical PHP2Shell vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619) were announced for PHP core, we mobilised across the agency to safeguard all our client storefronts and managed cloud environments.

Assessed impact across all Magento clients: because PHP underpins our core e-commerce platforms, we audited dependencies across all our Magento stores to map out runtime versions and cloud container setups immediately.

Proactively monitored the emergency upstream drop: we tracked the coordinated CERT-EU / PHP core release at 14:00 UTC to review memory management fixes across supported PHP branches (8.2 through 8.5).

Escalated priority cloud vendor support: we opened high-priority tickets with Adobe Commerce Cloud support to track base OS and container patch schedules, ensuring maintenance windows were locked in early.

Verified post-patch deployments and caches: we validated updated container images, ran health checks and scheduled necessary cache flushes to keep every storefront secure and running smoothly with zero disruption.

Webflow launches Webflow Campaigns

One workflow for on-brand landing pages, personalised variants, ad creative and reporting, separate from your core site.

Webflow has introduced Webflow Campaigns, a standalone tool that unifies on-brand landing pages, personalised variants, ad creative and reporting into a single workflow, enabling independent campaign launches separate from the core website.

The tool extracts your brand into a reusable design system and uses campaign briefs to generate landing pages and message-matched ads. Users can customise copy, layouts and creative via a marketer-focused visual canvas, or build using preferred AI tools through Webflow’s MCP.

Create targeted page variations with unique URLs for specific audiences. Connect forms to marketing workflows and launch Google Ads Performance Max campaigns directly in Webflow. Track conversions and connect CRM tools like HubSpot or Salesforce to measure pipeline impact, while AI insights recommend ongoing improvements.

It is available now, but not as a billable add-on: you must go through a demo with Webflow first.
